What is an Accelerated Nursing Program?

Accelerated BSN (ABSN) programs, like traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, provide a strong foundation for a successful nursing profession.

ABSN programs achieve this by leveraging your prior academic experience, allowing you to focus only on nursing-specific coursework rather than electives and general education courses. “Previous academic experience” may refer to a particular quantity of college credits or a non-nursing bachelor’s degree depending on the program.

ABSN programs generally take 9 to 15 months. There is a catch, however. Most accelerated nursing programs demand that you have previously completed specific prerequisites before enrolling. These courses are generally focused on the field of nursing (for example, anatomy and physiology), although they may also encompass elements important to a school’s core values or purpose.

Entrance Requirements for a New York Accelerated Nursing Program

  • Bachelor’s degree: You need to have your bachelor’s degree to be eligible for accelerated nursing programs, but it can be in any subject!  
  • GPA: You do not need to take a test for eligibility but most schools will require that you have a minimum GPA of 3.0. These can vary by school so check before applying!
  • Complete pre-requisites: While your bachelor’s degree can be in anything, you may need to complete certain courses before you can apply to an accelerated nursing program. Usually these will be science courses such as biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and more.
  • Letters of recommendation: Like any application you need letters of recommendation. Make sure to reach out ahead of time to the people you want to write your letters so that you are not scrambling at the last minute. 
  • Submit applications: You should look over the applications in advance so you know how much time you will need to complete them. In addition to demographics and basic questions, you may have essays to write. You will also need to collect past transcripts, submit and updated resume, and possibly additional paperwork.
  • Interview: Most schools will not require an interview but it always helps to check!

Accelerated programs – the ABSN at Utica College is a hybrid CCNE accredited program for students with a prior bachelor’s degree or non-nursing credits. Those with at least 65 college credits with a 2.8 cumulative GPA can start their ABSN program when ready. It an ideal path for those who desire a fast track into the nursing field. In sixteen months, students will achieve their goal. There are three starts a year (January, May, and August) as part of the school’s rolling admission. It is part of the “no wait list” policy. An early admission option is available through the Prerequisite Priority (PREP) program. Online nursing theory courses are the foundation of the degree. Nursing students have access to UC’s state-of-the-art Albert and Gloria Shaheen Nursing Laboratory that features a fully-equipped simulated hospital ward and advanced learning technologies risk free. How Long Does it Take to Complete an Accelerated Nursing Program in New York?

This all depends on the school of course so take some time to shop around. In general you will be able to earn your BSN through an accelerated nursing program in 18 months or less. Some of these programs will be non-stop year round, while others may factor in a break. You will complete not only course work but also required hands on clinical experiences during this time so that you can master your new nursing skills.

First applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an approved university. The typical list of prerequisites for admission to the Accelerated BS in Nursing program at Pace University is as follows:

Term One (Fall or Spring – 16 credits)

  • Health Assessment & Promotion – This course focuses on the development of comprehensive health assessment skills, including measures of physical and functional status, documentation of the assessment findings, and health promotion strategies for each body system. Considerations of racial and cultural differences are discussed with respect to health assessment as well as health promotion strategies.
  • Pathophysiology – Emphasis is placed on the relationship of usual health patterns of major body systems to changes that occur during the illness experience. Major pathophysiologic concepts are explored using a body systems approach. Theories relating to etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations are used to study common disease processes. Concepts from anatomy, physiology, and chemistry courses provide the foundation for exploring human dysfunction. Concepts learned in this course are basic to nursing practice.
  • Adult & Elder Nursing I – This course focuses on the development of the concepts and skills used by the professional nurse. Using nursing theory, students apply the nursing process and nursing skills in the on-campus laboratory practice and in the care of adult clients and their significant others in clinical settings such as acute care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.
  • Professional Nursing – This course explores historical assumptions about nursing as a basis for understanding professional roles and the image of nursing in today’s society. Nursing is identified as a learned, valued profession; emphasis is on the influence of history in its evolution. Contemporary nursing workforce, educational trends, and practice issues are explored as primary factors in professional status. Ethical and legal aspects of nursing practice are discussed. Political and economic factors shaping nursing practice in the health care delivery system are defined and evaluated and compared to other health systems.

Term Two (Spring or Summer – 15 credits)

  • Integrating Evidence into Clinical Practice – The course focuses on the conceptual and research development of nursing knowledge for evidence-based practice. Areas of nursing inquiry currently investigated are presented. The validity of quantitative and the conformability of qualitative methods used to answer nursing research questions are discussed. Students critically evaluate current nursing research and assess applicability to clinical practice. They also evaluate and assess the applicability of related research reported in the media.
  • Acute Care Psych Nurse – This course focuses on bio-psychosocial models as a perspective for viewing health promotion of persons and groups experiencing vulnerabilities and alterations in mental health across the life span. The nursing process is applied to individuals and groups in acute care mental health settings.
  • Adult & Elder Nursing II – This course focuses on professional nursing care for individuals and their significant others experiencing acute and/or chronic illness. The nursing process is applied in caring for adults and their significant others across health care settings, such as the hospital, skilled nursing facilities, and home care.
  • Nursing Pharmacotherapeutic – This course provides students with the knowledge of pharmacologic preparations used in the maintenance of health and prevention of illness. The content focuses on the drug actions, therapeutic response, patient-teaching responsibilities, and nursing implications in identifying areas of side effects, adverse effects, drug interactions, and safe administration of medications for patients of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. Evidence-based research and legal/ethical issues are also addressed in the context of the nurses’ role in pharmacotherapy.

Term Three (Summer or Fall – 15 credits)

  • Maternity Nursing – This course focuses on providing a nursing process framework for examining families in the childbearing years. Individual, societal, cultural, and environmental variables and healthcare disparities relating to childbearing and parenting are identified. Delivery of nursing care to pregnant, laboring, and postpartum mothers and their newborns is the clinical focus, with a goal of maximizing the health potential of young families.
  • Adult & Elder Nursing III – This course focuses on the interactions among aging, disease, functional ability, the environment, and health disparities of adults and elders. Emphasis is placed on the application of the nursing process to health promotion/maintenance and disease management relating to orthopedics, neurology, cognition and decision making, genitourinary, rehabilitation, immune dysfunction, and elimination in the adult and older adult populations.
  • Pediatric Nursing – This course provides a family theory and nursing process framework for examining families in the child-rearing years from infancy through adolescence. Individual, societal, cultural, and environmental variables and health care disparities relating to childrearing and parenting are identified.
  • Contemporary Issues in Health Care – This course will explore current issues in the evolution of patient care in contemporary health care systems. Embedded in the human experience of illness and health are rich sub-concepts with ethical and moral implications such as comfort and suffering, genetics/genomics, bioethics, addiction, culture and healthcare disparities, LGBT healthcare needs, interprofessional collaboration, global health issues, and policy.

Term Four (Fall or Spring – 18 credits)

  • Community Health Nursing – This course focuses on understanding and applying the theoretical principles of and evidence base for public health nursing to culturally competent, community health nursing practice and professional role development. The focus of community health nursing practice is on protecting and enhancing the health of communities and humanly diverse populations, including those at risk and those challenged by health disparities, developmental needs, and mental health concerns and for clients living with poverty. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, health care policy, and ethics.
  • Leadership & Management in Nursing – The goal of this course is to facilitate the paradigm shift from student to professional nurse. The focus is on the understanding, synthesis, and application of the evidence- base for using leadership and management principles in prioritizing and delivering nursing care to groups of patients as a team member within the health care organization. The course prepares the student nurse for entry into professional nursing practice after graduation. It addresses health policy, economic issues, and the integration of ethical and legal aspects of care.

What Are the Clinical Requirements for an ABSN in New York

The number of supervised clinical hours you will be required to complete will depend on the state you live in. In general however, most states require about 500 clinical hours for you to earn your BSN and sit for the NCLEX RN exam. Clinical hours are experiences where you are paired with an experienced nurse (called your preceptor) and get to practice your clinical skills on real patients. Having someone to supervise you as you master these skills helps you be prepared to be a safe new nurse when you become licensed.

4 Steps To Register for the NCLEX

Be sure to talk to your school about the requirements for signing up for the NCLEX. They can help you with timing and steps. The process can take some time, so don’t wait until the last minute. Here are some important steps you need to take to register for the big day:

  1. Check out your state’s Board of Nursing (BON) website to sign up so that you are eligible to take the NCLEX. The NCBSN website has information you need on your state’s BON.
  2. Your NCLEX eligibility requirements can be found through your BON.
